This weeks broadcast is on Crohn’s Disease (CD). CD is an autoimmune disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract, and most commonly results in bloody diarrhea, fever, weight loss, joint pains, and in some cases skin lesions.
Patients with CD tend to have flare ups, and commonly will require surgery to remove portions of the intestines or colon that become inflamed and block the passage of intestinal and bowel contents. Currently, this with the use of immune modulating medications are the standard of care.
In today’s broadcast we discuss the underlying causes of this autoimmune disorder, and some of the exciting new therapies being employed to decrease symptoms and flare ups in CD patients.
